The Chicago Botanic Garden and Northwestern University have offered a research thesis track Master of Science in Plant Biology and Conservation since 2005. Today over 50 students have graduated and are working in related fields and attending PhD programs around the world.
Students in the MS program receive a strong foundation in plant ecology, evolution and conservation and can choose to specialize from a variety of research areas. Students typically take between two to two and a half years to complete the degree, with all course work completed in year one and research emphasized in year two. It is strongly recommended that all applicants contact any faculty members with whom they may be interested in working, so that they have a good idea about opportunities and how their interests fit with the program. The strongest applications often come from individuals that have spoken with one or more faculty members in advance of submitting their application.
