Department of Biology
The Department of Biology at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa teaches its students a greater appreciation and understanding of living systems, using the unique environment of Hawaii as a natural laboratory for study.
Students and faculty in the Department of Biology are passionate about their research, and have often received recognition for their work and dedication. See some of our recent achievements.
The Department of Biology hosts the Zoology Graduate Program, offering three degrees: a thesis M.S. (Plan A) in Zoology, a more coursework-oriented non-thesis M.S. (Plan B) in Zoology, and the Ph.D in Zoology.
The thesis M.S. and the Ph.D. are research-oriented degrees, intended primarily for students intending a career involving research.
The non-thesis M.S. requires less research experience than does the thesis M.S. and so is appropriate for students planning non-research careers, such as teaching or government service, as well as those planning research careers.
